PRINCE2 Foundation vs Practitioner: Which Course is Right for You?

PRINCE2 Foundation vs Practitioner: Which Course is Right for You?

There is no doubt about the fact that PRINCE2 accelerates your career in project management, but what are the right next steps for you in your career? In this blog, we will go through what each variation entails, along with the type of person it is most suited to, to help you decide which course is right for you.

Naming Conventions

PRINCE2 was released in 1996, with the acronym standing for PRojects IN Controlled Environments. Over time the acronym was orphaned as PRINCE2 became a proper noun.

In 2025, PeopleCert elevated PRINCE2 to a brand title covering all their Portfolio, Programme and Project qualifications. What was PRINCE2 V7 became PRINCE2 Project Management V7.

In this blog, we will refer to PRINCE2 Project Management V7 as PRINCE2.

A Short Answer

So, who are the PRINCE2 Foundation and Practitioner courses for? The PRINCE2 courses are for anyone in a project management career path. From aspiring project managers to established project leaders, any role that incorporates project management would benefit from PRINCE2!

Both the foundation and practitioner variations of PRINCE2 follow the same 7 principles, just in different depths.

If you are new to the world of PRINCE2, or your project management knowledge is limited, the foundation course is the perfect fit, with its “mastering the basics” approach.

If you want to look deeper into project management to understand how to tailor those 7 principles into real-world scenarios, PRINCE2 Practitioner is for you.

What is PRINCE2?

The PRINCE2 framework is globally recognised and follows 7 principles:

The framework guides learners towards effective project management, teaching them the skills to strategise, create, sustain and learn from projects, preparing them for real-life scenarios in project management roles.

PRINCE2 Project Management Version 7

Currently at version 7, the PRINCE2 framework is constantly evolving in line with the modern workplace. Brought out in 2023, the 7th version integrated critical factors that the 2013 version 6 was missing, such as:

  • A stronger focus on humans - A successful campaign can only be achieved with factors such as collaboration.

  • More room for flexibility - Expanding from the constraint of PRINCE2’s “Themes” and evolving them into practices.

  • Less administrative weight - Documentation was simplified and consolidated

A Comparison Of The Two

PRINCE2 V7 Foundation and Practitioner courses differ greatly, despite being based on the same principles. This is mainly due to the difference in difficulty and depth that the respective courses go into.

Audience fit

PRINCE2 Foundation is suitable for all, whether project management professionals or otherwise.

PRINCE2 Practitioner, on the other hand, is tailored towards project management individuals with more experience; those in business analysis roles, or project team leaders who need to apply PRINCE2 to real-world situations, rather than simply understanding the terminology.

Prerequisites

As the PRINCE2 Practitioner courses are more in-depth, they require a foundation of knowledge before they can be taken. Find the prerequisites here.

PRINCE2 Foundation courses can be taken with no prior knowledge or certification, making them a great entry point for project management.

Difficulty

As the practitioner course goes into more depth and requires prior understanding of the topic, this course is generally more difficult than the foundation level.

However, with the support and resources that Zindiak can provide, we ensure our learners go into the exam feeling confident. Find out more about Zindiak’s courses.

Outcomes

With this globally recognised certification, there are many benefits to both versions of the course.

With PRINCE2 foundation courses, you gain a solid foundation of knowledge that can act as a prerequisite for further certifications.

For the Practitioner exam, you gain the more holistic benefit of being able to improve your day-to-day work activities by applying the PRINCE2 principles and subsequently opening yourself up to new roles and promotions.

Best starting point

Here at Zindiak, we advise all learners to start with the foundation level for each course. This is not only so you understand how PRINCE2 specifically works, but also how Zindiak operates.
