ITIL 4 Foundation Exam Tips: Common Mistakes to Avoid

When studying for the ITIL 4 foundation exam, there are some common mistakes that people make without realising. Below, we have detailed some of these mistakes so studying can be a little bit easier for you.

Lack of focus

Our first ITIL 4 foundation exam tip is to focus on the syllabus. You don’t need to read the whole of the ITIL 4 Foundation eBook cover-to-cover, and realistically, it would be very hard to remember all of that. Therefore, we highly recommend reviewing the syllabus and focusing your study on the key topics.

Not Memorising Key Terms and Definitions

You may well have experience of service management and believe you understand ITIL. However, there are still several key terms and definitions that you need to be able to recognise in the exam to pass.

If you don’t have a photographic memory, you will need to put some effort into memorising them. We highly avoid focusing on these key terms as they are relatively easy marks that you don’t want to miss in the exam.

Overlooking Time Management

It’s not enough to answer all the questions in the two sample papers. You need to do so under the time pressure you will face in the real exam. Therefore, another one of our ITIL 4 foundation exam tips is to give yourself an hour and answer a full paper before checking your answers.

If you are looking for a sample mock exam to complete, you can find one here. ITIL 4 Foundation Mock Exam.

Not Studying Enough

As an absolute minimum, you should aim to be able to score 80% in both sample papers before you take the certification exam. If you’re scoring less than 80%, you need to study more because the pressure of the exam is likely to result in you getting a few questions wrong, so you need to be above the threshold.

Not Respecting the Exam

The ITIL 4 Foundation exam is not especially difficult, but some students make it so by thinking they can pass without studying. So, whilst it may seem obvious, our final ITIL 4 foundation exam tip is not to assume you can pass without studying.
